Our Journey

From Baghdad to possibilities beyond borders

Hendexa began with a journey through different countries, educational systems, and expectations—and an understanding of how socioeconomic circumstances and access to guidance can shape educational possibilities.

Baghdad · Where it began

Our founder, Dr Reyam Rammahi, completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Baghdad. The first in her family to pursue graduate study and the first woman in her family to study abroad, she navigated unfamiliar pathways that would later shape Hendexa’s purpose. Her experience informs our awareness of the financial pressures and social expectations that can place opportunities out of reach.

San Diego · Expanding horizons

A Fulbright scholarship took her to San Diego State University, where she earned an MA in English and Comparative Literature in 2020. Her research won the College of Arts Dean’s Award for Research and Scholarship. Studying in the United States brought first-hand experience of adapting to a new academic and cultural environment—and reinforced the importance of funding in making international education accessible.

Oxford · Turning experience into purpose

After receiving five doctoral offers, including one from Cambridge, she pursued a fully funded DPhil in English at Oxford as an Oxford–Qatar Thatcher Graduate Scholar, completing it in 2025. Alongside her research, teaching, mentoring, and university outreach deepened her commitment to helping others find their place in higher education, particularly those whose potential is overlooked because of their background or circumstances.

Why we started Hendexa

Academic ambition is not limited to those with financial security, established networks, or familiarity with university systems. Yet socioeconomic barriers and geographical circumstances can affect who feels able to apply—and who receives the support to succeed.

We founded Hendexa to make high-quality academic support clearer, more humane, and more accessible. We help people understand their options, strengthen their skills, and develop applications and research that express their own ideas.

As we grow, we aim to widen participation through resources, outreach, and opportunities for subsidised support, with particular attention to economically disadvantaged learners, first-generation applicants, women facing barriers, and other underrepresented communities.
